The year is 1922 and Babe Ruth is struggling at the plate. An early season suspension by baseball commissioner Landis and the Bambino’s profligate lifestyle have taken its toll. Worse yet is the blackmail letter sent to the two Yankee owners pay fifty thousand dollars or it will be revealed that Ruth has Negro blood in him. An old acquaintance is called in, a man Ruth has threatened “to kill” for taking a photograph of him and his fellow teammates at an Illinois brewery. The private detective Kelly’s job is to settle with the blackmailer and expose the lies – or suppress the truth. From the Polo Grounds to the speakeasies of New Jersey and Baltimore, from Harlem to the suburbs of Philadelphia, Kelly travels to squelch the scandal and chaperon the Babe.
Intolerance and racism abound in the 1920s. It is also the dawn of the Negro Leagues, spawned by the boycott of black players by major league baseball and white prejudice. Young Joshua enters Kelly and the Babe’s lives and upends long held beliefs. The rise in popularity of the home-run, fueled by Babe Ruth, was a revolutionary turn in baseball history. To Kelly’s dismay, Joshua and the Babe hatch a plan that would have far greater repercussions.
Along the way in his story Kelly tells us how he meets F. Scott Fitzgerald, who suspects his wife of infidelity. He reluctantly assists a woman who thinks her daughter-in-law is unfaithful to her son. He reveals he learned photography from Alfred Stieglitz, and unveils a profound secret from Giants manager John McGraw. Most notably, we learn what really happened with that famous home run call.

A delightful trip back almost 100 years to a different time in America. Characters were a product of the prevalent culture and quite likable. I frequently found myself smiling while reading this most entertaining book. I'm giving it four stars, five being reserved for very few books, such as "The Great Gatsby".Product details

Black Babe edition by J Michael Bryson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
“Black Babe” has a gripping narrative that kept my attention from start to finish. J. Michael Bryson has done a lot of background research to produce a realistic piece of fiction. While it is not presented as verified fact, given the social milieu of the time (the 1920s), it is certainly consistent with what might have happened. Whether you're a baseball fan or not, if you want to experience the way things were in an age when racial and ethnic prejudice were far more out in the open than they are today, this is a book you should read.
This might be the dumbest book I ever read. I kept reading to see if it could get any dumber as it went along and it did. , please do something for the world and pull this piece of you know what off your site! On the other hand if you enjoy pathetic writing, just plain silly plots, this is for you! I love Babe Ruth and baseball folklore and i have no idea why I downloaded this book. Please for the sake of America and all that is good, do not buy this!
